About Us

The company Fliesenhandel Konrad Schittek GmbH is dealing with old industrial tiles from the year 1900 until today and is storing about 4500 paletts. Nearly all walls and floors in the bathrooms and kitchens of German homes, hotels, retirement homes, as well as commercial buildings are equipped with these tiles. They are required everywhere for repairs but are no longer available on the market.

However, we not only have the old tiles in stock but we are storing the actual ranges in order to have replacements for you later.

Furthermore, certain tiles are manufactured in our kilns. In our showrooms in Hamburg-Sinstorf there is an exhibition of our own products, from hand made and decorated „historical tiles“ to large ceramic murals.

How It All Started

In 1978, an art tile manufacture was founded by Konrad Schittek in Hamburg-Altona. He produced hand painted tiles in the traditional way, as well as reproductions for restoring or supplementing old historical tiles.

This interesting work had often been reported in magazines, such as a well known building and living magazine „Das Haus“. Here it was wrongly reported - and that was important – that any tile could be reproduced on demand. Since then requests started coming in for old tiles that were off the market for repairs and restoration purposes from craftsmen and insurance companies.
He realised that not all tiles could be reproduced, but at the same time it became clear how much demand there was in this field.

Retaining any tiles in reserve for damages had not been considered up till then, in the least by the
tile factories and specialist shops . Only some tilers had stored old material either for guarantee purposes or for nostalgic reasons. Seldom do end users keep any spare tiles. In Germany you can buy spare parts for almost any product, but for tiles it is almost impossible – a gap in the market was discovered!

Besides manufacturing tiles, we started in those days searching for remaining stocks of the tile models that were frequently sought after, which we found with tilers and renowned specialist retailers. A thorough research into this field followed, gathering know-how about the different factories, qualities, sizes, glazes etc. As the stock grew bigger, we had to move to new premises in Hamburg-Sinstorf.
